WoW Forever Character Models: HD, SD & Classic Animations

Last checked: October 5, 2026. World of Warcraft: Forever gives players more choice over how Azeroth and their characters look. Blizzard has announced High-Definition (HD) and Standard-Definition (SD) character-model options, modern and Classic visual presets, and restored Classic animations for HD models. These options are part of presentation, not a new character class or combat stat.

Use this page to understand the announced choices and plan what to compare in beta. For other Forever features, visit the Systems Hub; for playable-character options, see the races hub and classes hub.

HD and SD models

HD and SD describe different character-model presentations. The choice lets players decide whether they prefer updated character art or a more familiar Standard-Definition appearance. Blizzard’s announcement presents the options as player choice: you can prioritize the look that feels closest to your idea of Azeroth rather than treating one setting as the correct way to play.

When comparing them, look at a character you know well in several situations: standing in a city, moving through a busy zone, wearing different armor, and using class animations. Check faces, silhouettes, armor fit, and how readable the character remains at your normal camera distance. The appearance of one race or armor set is not enough to judge every model in the game.

Classic and modern visual presets

Forever also offers modern and Classic visual presets. Blizzard describes these as choices for the game’s visual presentation, alongside separate HD/SD character-model options. Treat them as distinct controls until the in-game menus explain exactly how each setting affects your client. A visual preset should not be assumed to change combat rules, item stats, or other players’ gameplay.

For an apples-to-apples comparison, change one presentation option at a time, revisit the same location, and note the exact option names and build date. This is especially useful during beta: screenshots can appear different because of lighting, weather, camera distance, or a patch rather than a model toggle.

Classic animations for HD models

One announced detail is particularly relevant to Classic players: HD character models can use restored Classic animations. The goal is to combine a higher-definition appearance with movement that feels closer to the original game. If animation feel is important to you, test walking, running, casting, melee attacks, and idle poses instead of judging only the character-creation portrait.

Appearance options are separate from armor appearance collection. Our Transmog guide explains how players can customize what gear looks like, while the Itemization guide covers combat stats and equipment power.

Performance and system requirements

WoW Forever’s updated visual look comes with published GPU requirements. Check Blizzard’s official WoW Forever GPU Requirements before troubleshooting graphics issues or assuming a particular model option is responsible. Requirements apply to the game client as a whole; do not infer that choosing SD models removes every hardware requirement.

If the beta offers graphics choices on your machine, compare visual preference and smooth performance together. Update drivers through your GPU vendor’s official channel, test in a populated area as well as an empty one, and keep any crash or performance report tied to the game build and hardware configuration. We do not claim that one preset guarantees a higher frame rate across all systems.

What is confirmed and what to check in beta

Confirmed by Blizzard: HD and SD character-model options, modern and Classic visual presets, restored Classic animations for HD models, and an updated visual presentation for Forever. Check in the current client: the exact menu labels, which settings can be combined, whether a choice applies to the whole world or only your client, and any performance impact on your setup.
