Mages turn Arcane, Fire, and Frost magic into ranged damage, battlefield control, and useful travel and group tools. They suit players who like choosing the right spell for the moment: interrupting an enemy, slowing a pursuer, clearing a cluster of foes, or focusing damage on a dangerous target.

How the Mage plays
Mage is a cloth-wearing ranged damage class. Its three familiar specializations emphasize different approaches: Arcane magic and resource management, Fire spells and burning damage, and Frost magic with slows and control. The details of any current WoW Forever talent build should be checked in the game; the established specialization themes are a useful orientation, not a promise about exact numbers or the strongest build.
Mages bring more than damage. Their toolkit includes spells that hinder enemies, area attacks for groups, and defensive magic that can help them survive when opponents close the distance. Conjured food and water support recovery between fights, while portals and teleports make travel more convenient. Arcane Intellect is a familiar group buff. Which spells are available, and when to use them, depends on character level and the current build.
In groups and solo
In dungeons and raids, a Mage can contribute ranged single-target and area damage, control dangerous enemies, and provide familiar group utility. Mages are not a tank or healer, so positioning matters: stay at range, watch threat, and use defensive tools when a fight turns toward you. While questing, range and control can make it easier to manage enemies, but cloth armor makes careless pulls risky.
In player-versus-player combat, slowing, rooting, and other control effects can create room to cast or escape. That strength depends on timing and matchup, and does not make a Mage durable when caught without a response.
Mage in WoW Forever
Blizzard’s Forever Deep Dive confirmed a broader class and talent redesign, including talent milestones at levels 11, 16, 21, and 31, with selected class buffs becoming baseline. The presentation did not publish a complete Mage spell list, final talent trees, or verified rotations and rankings. Treat specific build advice as provisional until it can be checked against the live game.
Forever also expands race and class choices. Blizzard confirmed Orc Mage and an Alliance-aligned Skyborne Mage option. Those combinations expand character choice; no unique Mage racial mechanics were announced in the Deep Dive. Read the Orc and Skyborne guides for race context.

September 24, 2026 beta update
Blizzard’s September 24 beta notes report several Mage changes. Arcane Missiles now checks line of sight when the channel begins. For Fire, Wake of Fire lasts 30 seconds (up from 20), and Hot Streak lasts 20 seconds (up from 15); Ignite no longer applies damage modifiers twice. These are beta values and may change before launch, so verify spell behavior in the current build.

Cooldown manager beta test
Mage is one of five supported classes for the new cooldown manager. It is off by default under Options > Gameplay Enhancement. The current beta version does not yet support spell ranks; Blizzard is seeking feedback on which cooldowns should be tracked by default.
